He was born and raised in Istanbul and began his acting career at Bakirkoy Community Center Theatre. He later worked in major theatres such as Ankara and Istanbul State Theatres, and also performed in smaller venues with now-famous actors. His breakthrough came with the play *Mice and Men*. Although known on stage, his nationwide fame came through film after the 1950s. In the 1970s, he starred in several Ertem Egilmez films, often alongside Adile Nasit, forming an iconic duo. His most memorable role was Kel Mahmut, the idealistic high school principal in the *Hababam Sinifi* film series. Though he stepped back from the spotlight with the rise of television, he made occasional appearances. In 1998, he was honored as a State Artist by the Ministry of Culture. After struggling with alcohol in his youth, he quit entirely in the 1990s. Married four times, he had three children; one of them, Guner Ozkul, is also an actress and presenter.
